Campus Reunion Concert 2009 @ Raffles Hotel Jubilee Hall

Alright, I just got home from the above-mentioned event and I'll need to sleep soon because I have to wake up early tomorrow.

It was a good concert and I enjoyed myself. I will blog more about the details of the concert tomorrow when I come back. ^__^

I met up my concert partner at Raffles City Starbucks at around 6.00pm for a slow dinner. I shall just appropriately nicknamed her as a patroness of local music. We went over to The Soup Spoon for a nice dinner of mushroom and pumpkin soup with nam (it's some sort of Indian-styled bread very similar to roti prata) and spent a good hour over there before we strolled along The Raffles Hotel Shopping Arcade to work off dinner before the concert.

Both of us finally entered Jubilee Hall at around 7.50pm and the singing portion of the concert opened up with Yiyuan of Campus Superstar Season 1 leading with a Cantonese song by Jacky Cheung. The concert ended with three encore songs at around 11.10pm but we did not stay for the signing of the posters because the patroness was tired and wanted to go home early. She was not the kind of people who wanted to be photographed so I did not really get to meet the Campus Superstars performers after the concert.

I believe a handful of the Campus Superstars performers are still interested to know how their concert fare through my eyes and I even received an sms wanting to know when I would be posting my concert review. So here it is:

I won't be doing a detailed performance commentaries for each of the performers during the concert, not because I did not have my notebook or my headphones, but because these are actually Campus Sueprstars graduates and thus have moved beyond the competition commentaries. Moreover, by staging a public ticketed concert, the review would be based on a different format as appropriately matched against their new statuses as young singers and performers of Singapore.

Quality of performances:
Overall, the quality had definitely improved since the last time these CSS seniors had stood onstage. Notably, Geraldine, Yiyuan, Keely, Agnes and Joanna had improved in terms of stability of singing and performance vibrancy.

Geraldine had markedly soothed into her rocker image with very solid control of the stage mood and momentum of the rock songs she had fielded.

I was duly impressed by the amount of suitable emoting done by Yiyuan for both his sentimental and rock songs.

I liked the breakthroughs made by Keely when she fielded her very sensual performance during the third item as well as her duet with Zijie.

Agnes improved considerably in terms of her techniques and stability in singing. Her strong commitment onstage to entertain the audience was also noted.

Joanna was impressive in her English song when I heard her singing mature smoothly into a nearly country-styled singing.

The rest of the performers had also some improvements made since I last saw them.

Zijie was doing much better with his falsetto skills.

Choon Keat was slightly more confident sounding whenever he was singing.

Huixian was able to commandeer beautifully high notes for her Japanese song.

Guohao was finally enjoying himself onstage, singing his heart out.

Javin could not be commented because he opted himself out from the concert due to some throat lesions but he bravely participated in two of the group songs despite his condition and I would like to compliment him on his dedication as well.

There were a few obvious hiccups though:

a) Group songs were not fully rehearsed, ending up with some performers missing their parts more than often

b) Some songs' keys were obviously too low for some performers, who inadvertently could not reach those notes at all.

c) Most of the performers did not rehearse their stage movements so whenever there was an interlude during the songs, they would fidget uncomfortably, shifting their legs, not knowing where to stand and look.

Concert Management:

Unfortunately, both the patroness of local music and I have fewer good things to say about the overall management of the concert. I understand that GW agency is the organizer of this concert but I would still comment about concert management because it was still a component in the overall enjoyment of the Campus Reunion Concert 2009.

a) Emcees - I personally do not like the emcees to speak behind the curtains because it seemed rather impolite to merely use voice alone to address the audience when even a few seconds' worth of appearance onstage to announce the next performance would have seem more polite and sincere.

b) Exit Strategies of Performers - Strangely, none of the organizers seemed to realize that most of the performers had trouble knowing when and how to exit the performing stage. I thought this issue should have been resolved during the full-dress on-site rehearsals and not reveal such an obvious weakness during concert day itself.

c) Sequencing of Performances - Twice, the performers had mistook their performances sequences, exiting and re-entering the stages awkwardly. I was wondering if there was actually a Program Manager who was supposed to remind and cue them.

d) Background Music - Both the patroness of local music and I agreed that the background music was too loud that it drowned out the performers' singing more than four times. It would be much better if there was a volume tester during the full-dress on-site rehearsals to make sure that such volumes were coordinated to give optimal entertainment.

e) Giving away of posters - What was intended for members of the audience who wanted autographed posters turned out to be a dangerous exercise as the performers hurled over 50 rolled posters into the audience. It seemed that there was no plan in hurling those posters and most performers were literally rocketing posters which landed like throwing spears and javelins, pummeling members of the audience who did not notice those flying posters. I personally blocked two incoming posters from hitting the patroness of local music but a senior member of the audience was hit right on the face because she was too old to react. If someone was badly hurt from this exercise, it would definitely blemish the concert and the organizers.

I understand that GW agency has had organized quite a number of local and regional events so it definitely had some experience behind it. If the organizers could work on the above-mentioned points further, I am sure the next Campus Reunion Concert would be even more successful and enjoyable.

First blog post of 2009. Happy New Year 2009 to everyone of you out there!!!

The previous year was quite a bad year of disasters - terrorists attacks, natural calamities, economic mess and casualties of good people. Let's hope this new year will usher in a better year for everyone.

I did not go for the countdown parties yesterday night because I was quite put off by the crowd squeeze of such mega-events so I took some time away instead. Nevetheless, I had managed to extract some of the more interesting and beautiful pictures from two of the largest countdown parties in Singapore to share with my blog readers who may or may not have attended or wanted some sort of photographic souvenirs but could not capture those ideal shots last night.

The following three pictures were contributed by a friendly Facebook user, x[t] who kindly gave permission for me to publish these very valuable closeup shots of MediaCorp celebrities who were onstage during the VivoCity Countdown Party. Once again, thank you to x[t] who probably went there hours ahead to secure such a position for these shots.

For those familiar with Project and Campus Superstars, from the left - Teresa Tseng (CSS 1), Diya Tan (PSS 2), Carrie Yeo (PSS 2), Keely Wee (CSS 2) and Shawn Tok (CSS 2).
For those familiar with MediaCorp acting and hosting celebrities, from the left - Rui En, Felicia Chin, Jeanette Aw, Dasmond Koh, Zhong Qin, Christopher Lee and Dai Tian Yang.
This was probably taken moments before the final countdown begins and we can see the ladies were waiting while Shawn Tok was himself onstage to the puzzled look by Sugi (PSS 1).

The following fireworks photographs were extracted from the official photography competition at the main website of Marina Bay Countdown Party 2009. Kudos to the hardworking photographers who captured such extraordinary shots of the fireworks this year.

Report on SPOP New Year Eve Mini-Concert @ Hougang Mall, Teresa's Latest Photos and Message to Her Supporters, My Christmas and New Year Celebrations

This will be an ultra-long post because I am packing a lot of things into it. Without further ado, let's get started.
For those who can't get enough of Teresa appearing on SPOP with Chen Weilian, the above are a series of screenshots some of the highlights of that episode. Everyone was teasing Weilian as he was blushing when Teresa sang "Cinderalla" and they had a lot of fun together during the recording.

Report on SPOP New Year Eve Mini-Concert @ Hougang Mall on 31 Dec 2007:

I was there at around 1pm and found Jolyn already sitting at the main audience area in front of the stage. However, the stage was elevated on two platforms and I thought the viewing of the performances would be rather difficult because of the stretched necks since the stage was so high up. So I took the liberty to find a seat on the second floor at Gelare and subsequently, Jolyn and Michelle joined me at the table.

Both Michelle and myself had not eaten our lunch so we ordered spaghetti and dessert to fill our stomachs whilst waiting up there. Blanket and JR, two of our fabulous fanclub photographers, arrived shortly and joined us for a while before they took up their positions to capture the best shots of Teresa's performances onstage.

At around 2.20pm, the Mini-Concert finally started and each of the twelve song compositions' singers came up onstage one by one to perform the SPOP songs. Here are some of the photos I have taken from my position. Some of them are blocked by a decorative tree by the side of the stage but at least it was a comfortable position to sit and watch the performances. With Blanket and JR around, I could relax abit without worrying too much about the photo-recordings of the event itself. =)

This is Nathaniel performing onstage. His singing is very good and he is confident of his performance.

This photograph shows Zhengning, Maxilian and Keely waiting for their turn to be onstage. The three girls are busy posing for the people there and Keely and Maxilian were like holding hands and swinging them. Very funny. Haha
This is Diya posing for the people as well. The shot is blurred but I can tell you that Diya is a very friendly and obliging celebrity, posing and signing autographs. No wonder she has so many supporters.
This is Jeremy Kwan posing at the same waiting area downstage. Quite a friendly guy and even without his singing partner, he could nail the song just as well.

Carrie belting out her song onstage. Her live version sounded alot better than the SPOP studio version but my alignment is still with Yu San. But way to go, Carrie. =)
Teresa going onstage for her turn to perform. She goes onstage with a smile and comes down fron it with a smile too. Could tell she really enjoys singing and her performance was flawlessly beautiful, attracting nearly everyone with a view of the stage to turn and look at her performance whilst she was singing Yu San. There was almost no qualitative difference between what you hear on my IMEEM player and the live version she sang at Hougang Mall. She must have put in a lot of work to master the song for all these outdoor events.

Teresa singing onstage. Unfortunately, the tree was in my way again but Teresa knows her stage movement well and managed to traverse from platform to platform. Unlike her first few public performances, I have little else negative to comment for all her recent performances. Teresa is a fast learner and can now manage her stage, audience and emcee interactions very well.

Yes, I know the photos I took of Teresa are no good but thankfully, both Blanket and JR have done their work well. JR has not uploaded all his photos yet but Blanket has finished his. Teresa's Latest Photographs and Message to Her Supporters:

Turning and facing different groups of audience at Hougang Mall, Teresa knows not everyone can see her onstage so she makes the effort to allow people to see her better by moving around from platform to platform.
Teresa smiling for the photographers at Hougang Mall, including one which she looks directly at Blanket himself on the fanclub shots. As with most of her public performances, almost all the professional photographers were busy snapping photos of Teresa. I could see all the flashes shimmering away the moment Teresa was onstage from my position on the second floor.

After Teresa's performance, I brought Michelle and Jolyn down to the first floor to wait for Teresa because Jolyn wants a photograph with Teresa and her autograph (Lucky her, she got both of them). Teresa did not leave Hougang Mall with the rest of the celebrities but she made her way to the escalator lift with her family, Thomas and Mdm Tseng instead. JR followed the three of us and we managed to get hold of Teresa whilst she was waiting for the lift.

My Christmas and New Year Celebrations:

I was really busy for the past week because most of my free time was spent celebrating Christmas and New Year with my VIP friends and family. Below are the photographs I have taken for my gatherings with my VIP friends for the past week.

What is this? Mashed potatoes. Why take this? Because I was doing all the mashing. Why am I mashing potatoes? Because I was part of the team preparing food at The Changed Man's house for a Christmas celebratory dinner gathering of the VIP friends. Mashing potatoes is not easy work but the end result earned praises because it tasted really smooth and yummy. Hahaha.
Another dish prepared on that night. It's carborona spaghetti with ham, peppers and bacon bits. Very nice and delicious and everyone ate their fill that night.
More dishes taken just before the dinner. Sausages from Germany, Mushroom soup from Campbell. The missing dish was the mashed potatoes, which I was taking a break from mashing it then. Hahaha
This was taken from another KTV session with my VIP friends. Sam Lee was one of our favourites and happy to say, I am getting the hang of singing his difficult and challenging songs. When I feel up to it, I may even post another performance video of myself singing his songs on this blog. Stay tuned! Wahahaha...
This is Landy on the KTV screen. Pretty hor? She is talented but unfortunately not a bright star yet because she has too few songs under her name so far.
The Chinese temple at Si Ma Lu. Yes, my VIP friends pray at that place and I followed them. Although I am a free-thinker, I pray for strength to continue my work to save the world whilst I was there too. I heard the temple was the only building left on that street during World War II. Apparently, even the Japanese bombers did not dare to offend the gods inside by bombing the temple.
This was where I was last night - St James Power Station - Boiler Room with twenty other young elites. It was by invitation and I was honoured to be part of them last night, partying away at that place. I have never been to that place and it was very nice - lots of live performances, lots of drinks and lots of beautiful people to look. Hahaha
As the night approached 0000hrs, the party got wilder and the lights got crazier. The end effect? A very high crowd jumping around, toasting around and dancing around. By that time, I was already 50% drunk. Haha.
A photograph of how much we had drunk last night. We ordered a 8.5litres of Chivas, two bottles of Absolute Volka, two bottles of Cordon Bleau and two tanks of beer - and we finished everything at night. I heard the bill footed by the two hosts was more than $2000. Woohoo~

By 1.40am, I was nearly 80% drunk and it was time for me to go because I had to some blogging and work to do today. Oh, I was the first to leave as the rest continued to party until daybreak. Those folks were simply amazing party animals.

Alright. That's the end of the long post. I have got to grab my lunch before my New Year Day continues.

I have been trying to reach Dione Tan, the songwriter for the abovementioned song to coordinate with her to publicize for the song but she seems uncontactable at the moment. So I have to proceed without her, hopefully only for the moment. Dione, if this blog post manages to reach you, can you contact me via the MSN address on my blog please?

I have put up the song from the SPOP voting website onto my IMEEM embedded player on my blog so that more listeners who have not had the chance to visit the SPOP voting website can hear how the song goes. Star Awards 25th Drama Anniversary Show - Part 9/15

Teresa Tseng Performing 《早安老师》with Campus Superstars on Star Awards 25th Drama Anniversary 09 Dec 2007

Pardon the low quality photos because they were snap shots when I realized Teresa actually had a performance item during the MediaCorp Star Awards tonight. So I quickly whipped out my handphone camera and took as many shots as I could. The black lines interfered with the quality of the shots but I suppose it's better than nothing ba.

Teresa was singing the lead part of 《早安老师》with a number of the Superstars but I was so engrossed in taking photographs and I could not accurately name all the others. =P

But one thing is for sure, MediaCorp loves Teresa enough to let her lead a performance during such an important event and I believe Teresa's hard work and efforts throughout the two years so far earned such a credential. Very happy for the girl indeed.

Teresa put up an excellent performance and I think her wondrous and high-quality singing together with the other Campus Superstars brought back such fond memories of the super-successful television series that Chen Liping, the original star actress was actually weeping away in her seat after the performance.

Report on The SPOP Hurray! Concert On The Move 08 Dec 2007

Phew, I am finally back from attending the abovementioned event and I must say that it was both a very enjoyable and yet frustrating event. Why do I say that? The reasons are below:

Apparently, the so-called Priority Boarding Passes were completely useless because when both Blanket and myself were there, there was no announcement about those with the special passes get to board first. In fact, there was no differentiation between those who went there at the boarding venue bus stop to collect passes and those who went all the way down to MediaCorp to collect theirs.

Also the organization for the boarding capacity was also in a complete mess. It seemed me that there were more people waiting (without passes) at the boarding venue and when the bus was full, the people who could not get onboard started arguing with MediaCorp personnel, wanting to get onboard even though the bus was already over-packed. Both Blanket and myself, with Priority Boarding Passes, had to stand for the entire journey with our views blocked by those without passes! In the end, MediaCorp relented and the bus was packed even more like sardines and almost 80% of the people onboard have no views to watch the celebrities sing (because the celebrities were all in the front portion of the articulated bus whilst nearly 50 people were jam-packed into the second portion of the bus - imagine the squeeze).

This photograph shows MediaCorp personnel blocking the back exit of the bus and negotiating with all those who have no passes and wanting to go onboard. The latter won and another ten more squeezed in.
The end result was this. After looking at what was happening, both Blanket and myself decided and successfully managed to move forward to the middle portion of the bus and thus managed to get a better view of the celebrities, which accounted for the remaining photographs taken. Blanket, using his much more advanced Cybershot camera, took more high-resolution photos of our dearest Teresa. At the moment of typing of this post, he must be busy selecting and uploading those pictures so everyone will get another series of photos on Teresa - be patient.

I myself was also interested in documenting as much of the trip's happenings as possible, including the performances of the other celebrities as well because I want to make this blog post an informative read for everyone else other than the faithful supporters of Teresa. This photograph shows Cuifang and Weibin, the hosts for the 2pm to 4pm bus concert. They worked very hard to secure the attention of the people onboard. My compliments to them.
This is Mi Lu Bing. SuperBand Season One Champions, who sang three songs and performed very well onboard despite the moving and shaking of the bus. I am very impressed by their live performance prowess but I am deeply disappointed by the behaviour of their supporters. Why? Because after Mi Lu Bing's performances, their supporters became rowdy and uncooperative, demanding to leave the bus even in the middle of the other celebrities' performances. That was totally bad form of them and I hope if their fanclub leaders get to read this, please rein them in because their behaviour was totally disrespectful to the other celebrities and all those who were there for not just Mi Lu Bing.
The three guys from Mi Lu Bing again, helping one another with the microphones and their guitar as well. I believe they are good celebrities but if my blog post actually reached them, perhaps they should also ask their supporters to behave better. Good performances still.
This is Nathaniel from Project Superstar Season Two. His singing has always been very good and he knows how to interact with the audience as well. I enjoyed his performance but I respected his ability to be understanding even though Mi Lu Bing's supporters were screaming for Mi Lu Bing in the middle of his performance. Nathaniel was nice enough to even wave to the departing Mi Lu Bing whilst singing when he saw the commotion of the former's supporters. Meanwhile, I was holding myself back from publicly admonishing Mi Lu Bing's supporters for being so rude and rowdy as they were interrupting Nathaniel's performance.
Nathaniel concentrating on his song even though the bus was making a huge turn. He maintained his falsetto buildup throughout the turn, undisturbed by all the commotion. Two extra points for his professionalism.

Two more Project Superstars Season Two celebrities singing their hearts out. I vaguely remembered their song was about some mosquito biting (a top 12 SPOP composition) and the lyrics were really funny. I was using the handphone to comment to Blanket (even though he was just standing in front of me) because the bus was so noisy from the talkative Mi Lu Bing's supporters.
Teresa finally appeared and she was seen her dressed casually in a black shirt and blue jeans, interacting with the two hosts onboard.
Another mega-watt smile flashed by Teresa as she responded to the comical tauting from the hosts that Teresa has many boyfriends under her belt. She was calm and composed and seemed to be able to cope with the emcees' questions with great ease and skill. Two extra points for her emcee interaction skills.
Teresa sang her designated song 雨伞, another SPOP top 12 song composition, and I must say the song was really difficult to emote and the lyrics and lines were tough to transit. Teresa did her best and the song was completed competently. The songwriter sang alongside with Teresa but she was blocked by the head of a tall girl standing in the way of my handphone camera.
Maxilian, from Project Superstar Season Two and Zhengning, from Campus Superstar Season Two, sang a duet together for yet another SPOP top 12 song composition. Maxilian's voice was quite good and Zhengning improved alot since I last hear her sing live. The duet was well done and my compliments to them as well. =)

Teresa sang a second song for some onboard game. This time, the song was 我要快乐 by Amei and her vocal prowess was in full blast again, impressing even some of the noisier Mi Lu Bing's supporters at the back of the bus to stop talking and start listening. Teresa knows her Amei songs by heart and the song was done excellently even though the bus was moving and swaying here and there. She was in full concentration of the song and the organizers actually removed the music from the song at the final portion but it totally did not affect Teresa's singing at all. Everyone onboard thus heard how crystal clear and powerful Teresa's singing was. Way to go, Teresa!
This is Teresa smiling at Blanket and myself as she caught both of us struggling to take photographs of her performances on the bus. Glad she still recognized both of us by sight and she acknowledged our presence with her smile as she continued her Amei song to her par excellence standard.
Zhengning was seen here doing a fast number and she is still one of the rare Campus Superstars who can do a fast song well even without the dancing. Too bad the bus was swaying so badly or her performance with a dance would surely rock the bus mood even more. She has improved alot and I believe she has finally caught a look at me after she asked Teresa who she was waving to when the trip had ended. Zhengning, if you are reading, well done on your performances today.
The guys from Project Superstar Season Two doing their best again for another number. The third could not be seen because some uncle with a massive camera was hopping around filming everyone and everything, much to the chagrin of those people behind who happened to be shorter and thus could catch even less of the performances onboard.
Maxilian was the last performer before the bus turned into Bukit Batok Bus Interchange. She did her best to entertain the audience onboard but I think most of them were too exhausted to be really listening to her. By then, my legs were already numb from tiptoeing on end. Yes, all the above photographs were taken with me tiptoeing. It was a tough job and I was like sticking my tongue in exhaustion when Teresa looked in our direction. The girl just laughed and smiled appreciatingly.

When both Blanket and myself disembarked from the bus, we tried to take another round of photographs of Teresa but the windows reflected our shots and thus there was too little light to do so. Despite that, Teresa saw us and we waved our goodbyes to her as the bus moved on to another location to allow the celebrities to rest.

I don't know if Teresa is still onboard the second or the third leg of the SPOP Hurray Concert On The Move trip but I was really glad that she was appreciative of our presence onboard and of course, managed yet again to excel in her performances even on a moving, crowded and noisy bus.

Well, now I have to wait for Blanket's photographs to be processed. Those will be uploaded onto the main fanclub site and I will also put them up here on my blog for everyone else to see as well.
