Literature in English: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (Updated on 06-Aug-2008)

This blog post is more for my English Literature students but interested readers who know a bit or two about the book probably will gain some insights from the extracts I am typing from two books that I borrowed. I just thought of sharing these instead of wasting paper printing out pages of pages of notes. After all, we must be environmentally-conscious whenever we can if we want to stick around on the planet.

As the outspoken champion of the perogatives of individual desire, Elizabeth Bennet should jeopardise both the social order, which demands self-denial, and the moral order, which is based on the absolute Christian principles...In fact, Elizabeth's triumph signals the achievement of the balance that characterizes Austen's mature novels, for it is the result, on the the hand, of the gradual transformation of social and pyschological realism into romance and, on the other, of a redefinition of romance.

--- From Mary Poovey, Chapter 6: Ideological Contradictions and the Consolations of Form (2) in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 101

'Principles' are often merely prejudices, and prejudices simply projects one's own interests on to the shifting scene outside so as to defend and reinforce the self.

--- From Mary Poovey, Chapter 6: Ideological Contradictions and the Consolations of Form (2) in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 102

Just as her father's defensive intelligence refracts and exaggerates Elizabeth's intellectual 'livliness', so Lydia's wild, noisy laughter helps clarify Elizabeth's 'impertinence'. But perhaps the most important function of Lydia's story derives from its placement. For Austen positions the annoucement of Lydia's elopement so as to precipirate the second, and most important, stage of Elizabeth's education.

--- From Mary Poovey, Chapter 6: Ideological Contradictions and the Consolations of Form (2) in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 106

Individualism is not simply morally suspect, Austen suggests; it is also based on a naive overestimation of personal autonomy and power. To pretend that one can transcend social categories or refuse a social role (as Mr Bennet does) is not only irresponsible; it also reveals a radical misunderstanding of the fact that, for an individual living in society, every action is automatically linked to the actions of others.

--- From Mary Poovey, Chapter 6: Ideological Contradictions and the Consolations of Form (2) in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 106

The entailed fortunte which so obviously benefits Mr Collins and so obviously restricts Jane Austen's heroine is merely the epitome of an economic privilege that is granted to men in general and of an economic restriction that is imposed on women, and the details of that privilege and restriction are explicitly recorded throughout the novel. It is the right of Austen's men to have work that pays to to rise through preference and education, and we are directly told who has had access to what.

--- From Judith Lowder Newton, Chapter 7: Women, Power and Subversion in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 119

Elizabeth too must learn that simplifications are dangerous; both she and Darcy insist on what is only provisional and half-true as final. Of her complacement division of humanity into intricate and simple characters, for example, Elizabeth comes to say, 'The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of either merit or sense' (pg 135). The irony of the novel's opening sentence lies in its assurance in simplification and generalizations, it's insistence that the local perception is universal, absolute, permanent.

--- From Judith Lowder Newton, Chapter 8: Neccessary Conjunctions in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 147

The shamelessness of Mrs Bennet's response is both an intellectual and a moral failing. Lydia, educated and admired by her mother, is the best example of Austen's understanding of ingratitude. Lydia...is without shame, unconscious of the suffering and inconvenience she exacts from others...Lydia's blindness is a matter of both the mind and the heart. In her letter of elopement to Mrs Forster - 'My Dear Harriet, You will laugh when you know where I am gone' (pg 291) - she reveals a numbness of preception as well as of feeling.

--- From Judith Lowder Newton, Chapter 8: Neccessary Conjunctions in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 151 to 152

The world of Rosings is one of meaningless formality, of material luxury and spiritual vacancy, even of ill health. And Charlotte Lucas's life with Mr Collins is not only a 'preservative from want' but a preservative from intelligence, gaiety, and love, an embalmed safety from possibility and the requirement of morality and hope.

--- From Judith Lowder Newton, Chapter 8: Neccessary Conjunctions in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 151 to 152

Marriage of course spawns other chief acts of life: birth, initiation, and, once again, mating and marriage. The first responsibility of parents is to educate and prepare their offspring for participation in his most central process so that they will harm neither themselves or others. Mr and Mrs Bennet are guilty of not preparing Lydia for mature initiation into this rite. As a result, her marriage is emotionally vacant and economically irresponsible; the narrative review of the three marriages at the close of the novel informs us that the Wickams are freeloaders.

--- From Judith Lowder Newton, Chapter 8: Neccessary Conjunctions in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice (1994); New Casebooks: pg 151 to 152

Trade - employed, due form, collect, receipt, buy, sell, business, supply, terms, means, venture.
Arithmetric - equally, added, proportion, addition, enumerate, figure, calculated, amount, amounting, inconsiderable, consideration.
Money - pounds, credit, capital, pay, fortune, valuable, principal, interest, afford, indebted, undervalue.
Material Possessions - estate, property, owner, house, manor, tenant, substantial, establishment, provided, foundation, belongs to.
Social Integration - town, society, civil, neighbourhood, county, fashion, breeding, genteel, marriage, husband, connection.

The general directions of reference taken by Jane Austen's language, as indicated by such list as those given above, are clearly materialistic. They reflect a culture whose institutions are solidly defined by materialistic interests - property and banking and trade and the law that keeps order in these matters - institutions which determine, in turn, the character of family relations, the amenities of community life, and the whole complex economy of the emotions.

Movie Review: The Dark Knight (2008)

Movie Review: The Dark Knight (2008)

You will find him frustratingly intelligent and sadistic in his ways of anarchy.
You will find him unbelievably ruthless to try and stop the anarchy from happening.

I thought it was just another superhero movie but with plenty of computer graphics and sequences but the movie actually had quite some character development and depth.

In the movie, Batman thought he finally found a worthy hero in Harvey(without having to wear a mask) for Gotham City and tried his best to push Harvey, the new police commissioner, to become the hero figure-head that the peope of Gotham needs to rally behind against crime. However, his plans went wrong when he cornered the money of the mob families, which in turn, risked hiring The Joker who promised to kill Batman for the mob.

It was a real roller-coaster ride from there as Batman and The Joker exchanged some of the fiercest battles of words, actions and intelligence. The Joker had some really horrific schemes up his sleeves (even though he claimed to be a spontaneous non-scheming anarchist) while Batman had to struggle with his mortal dilemmas when he had to choose between saving Rachel (the girl whom he hopes to be with) and Harvey (the hero-to-be whom he hopes to lead Gotham City).

I loved the action scenes for their intensity and pace and I really liked the battle of morals between order and chaos, good and evil depicted by both the actions and words of Batman, The Joker and Harvey. Expect many twists in the movie and see how some of the really difficult decisions Batman had to make in order to save what he treasured the most.

I would give it a high 4.75 out of 5 for this movie. Highly recommended for those who have not watched it yet.

Movie Review: Red Cliff (2008 - Part 1)

I watched the movie last night at Plaza Singapura Golden Village and felt that the movie was better than expected, even though there were a few things that still have room for improvement.

The movie sets itself in the context of an epic battle between the Han army led by Cao Cao and the alliance of between Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Brimming with hundreds of thousands of imperial troops, Cao Cao attempted to crush both the fatigued forces of Liu Bei and the inexperienced soldiers of Sun Quan at a place called Red Cliff so as to consolidate his plans to usurp the Han throne and became the Emperor himself.

Severely outnumbered by at least 8 to 1, both Liu Bei and Sun Quan formed an uneasy alliance (after much persuasion by Zhuge Liang from Liu Bei) and committed their very best warriors to fight off the overwhelming Han imperial troops.

I loved the battle scenes in the movie because those were flimed stroke by stroke, move by move, which clearly showed the skills of the real actors in the movie (they must have trained really hard for the movie) and I enjoyed the ingenuity behind those battle tactics and formations (especially the ones within the "tortoise battle formation) exchanged between Cao Cao, Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu. There were even a few scenes with situational and verbal humour between Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu over seemingly bizzare animal-related matters like horses, pigeons, tortoises but the zither duet between the two greatest military strategists of those times were very impressive as well.

The dialogue between the various characters, however, could have used more thought, cutting out redundancies, and some scenes like Sun Quan's tiger hunt scene were a bit draggy. All in all, I thought the movie lived quite up to expectations and I am looking forward to Part 2 where the great naval battle at Red Cliff would take place. I would give it a 4 star out of 5 particularly for its elaborate designs of the battle scenes as well as the beautiful scenery from which the movie was flimed against.

This may be Singapore's locality blueprint for new ERP gantries within the next decade...

Obviously, this means a radical transformation of how people will travel inside Singapore...

But it may or may not stop at that because since ERP is so efficient in preventing congestion in commuting chokepoints, we may even have...

And since everyone will be jostling to beat those ERP gantries at the abovementioned, there would surely be new commuting chokepoints at other parts of our lives such as...
What a unique Singapore it will be, don't you think so? Hahaha....

Some quick thoughts on the road

I am typing this inside a dimly-lit internet shop in an undisclosed location so a quick post about some random stuff before I have to go for my dinner and my evening lesson later on.

On my other tabs are two other websites - One is the browser-based strategy war-game called Imperial Ages, where I am waiting for my online armies to return back from their raiding trips before I send them out again (I don't believe in idleness for my troops in that game so I make them work very hard for me since I am paying alot of gold for their hourly upkeep. Hahaha). The other is Facebook where I play some other mini-games to keep myself entertained late night when I finally reach home.

My eyes are a little droopy because I slept very late last night, trying to design a nice house in The Sims 2 game. It's a promise made to a VIP friend and I intend to keep it so I dedicated three solid hours into the general framework of the house as well as the decoration of a couple of rooms. I will try to gather all the screenshots I have made and post them up here so that the readers can see how I go about designing a house. Hopefully my architectural taste will appeal to that VIP friend as well when the screenshots are up in public.

Yesterday, I had a very interesting lesson with a new student whom I have just taken up. Apparently, she had a terrible accident recently and nearly lost her life. Although she survived, she now suffered from some post-trauma stress and has developed illusions about shadows and darkness. Looks like I have to be very careful with my lessons because I don't want to bring back anything related to the accident which may trigger her stress levels to spike. This will be a challenging assignment to take on indeed because I have a special tightrope to walk on. I hope the poor girl recovers from it in time. After all, to be psychologically scarred even one survives is not a good way to move on in life either. Hope she will let the episode go in her mind eventually.

Recently, I have just watched the movie "Hancock". Although the action scenes were way over the top and made quite some blurring to my senses, I loved the characterization of Hancock in the earlier part of the movie where he struggled to find his superhero identity amidst the loneliness of what he thought he was the only kind on this planet. The later part of the movie with another female superhero and the whole thing about angels in pairs must separate or die was a little bit too bizzare but I suppose the director/scriptwriter of the movie wanted to convey the idea that "with great power comes great responsibility" in another way - whereby one must sacrifice some of the things he/she wants in order to fulfill one's destiny. On my movie-to-watch list are also Hellboy 2, Batman: Dark Knight, and Red Cliff. Big hole in my pocket again. Hahaha.

It's getting really noisy in the internet shop now because there is a group of boys playing Counterstrike and they keep screaming atop of the gunshots sounds blasting from their speakers. I guess I have to stop now because I am getting hungry - what shall I get for my dinner? Hmm...

Anyway, have a good weekend ahead everyone! =)

Initially, I wanted to do my performance commentaries as usual but after I saw the incredible amounts of efforts, pressure suffered and emotions going through the various revival round contestants and challengers, I feel so touched that I thought I shall spare them the sharpness or toughness of my performance commentaries. I really think I should skip this round altogether and just share the performances as simply as I can.

Let's do something else: Let's just do the simple thing for this revival round by just enjoying the performances and allowed us to be touched. Our congratulations to whoever is revived and our encouragements to all those who participated in this revival round of One Million Stars Season 3.

Music Dreamer Live! Cafe Auditions June 2008

I went for last Monday's Music Dreamer Live! Cafe's Auditions For Singers and Instrumentalists Round One because firstly, I wanted to continue to develop a keen eye and ear for performances since part of my interest is to critique on singing and performances in this blog. Secondly, I also get a chance by observing the participants and thus learn how to sing or perform better myself.

To prepare for the long night (which turned out to be a full 2.5 hours), I gouged myself on a nice plate of chay kway tiao and some homemade ice lemon tea. Sinful, right? It's terrible for the singing throat but I love sinful food just as much as singing but since I am not performing on that Monday night, I just let my appetite run free. Whee~~~munch munch munch~~~

Well, it turned out that I arrived early at the place so instead of going into the cafe, I strolled around and got myself a nice Cornetto ice-cream for dessert - chocolate - my favourite. I spent time walking around with my cone, speculating what the auditions would be like and the quality of the participants (I heard there will be a total of 5 days for the 1st round of auditions, bringing the total number of participants to over 100)

This is the stage before the auditions began. One of the senior instrumentalists, Jianli, was there and he actually asked how come I did not go for the auditions. He was so nice to be able to remember me even though the last time I sang alongside his music accompaniment was quite a while ago. I politely replied I was there as an observer.
This is contestant number four out of twenty-nine. Big, buffy fellow who was rushing back to his National Service Camp. I took his picture because I thought he had quite a good chance of making it through to the next round with his loud and clear singing.
Recognize him? Photo is fuzzy because of the lighting but it's Zijie of Campus Superstar Season Two. He threw in his lot to try for a place at the cafe auditions too but judging from how the judges panel in front of him were slightly shaking their heads, I have to be honest - his chances were a little slim.
This is contestant number 29 - one of the few who could play an instrument and sing at the same time. He did not look particularly eye-catching but he was good with his rendition of a Jay Chou song and his fingerwork on his guitar was definitely worth listening to. I thought he stood a chance too.

What about the ladies? Although there were a couple of really good-looking girls in the auditions, their choice of songs were pretty hard and I was so busy taking down notes for their performance commentaries that I could not find time to even raise the camera for them.
Anyway, the following were the notes taken. It seemed that most of the girls had trouble reaching the lownotes whilst the guys had problems keeping their beat to their songs. There was very little time between the participants' turns so I was furiously scribbling down what I heard and thought about their performances. There are still four more days of auditions so I will see if I can go down again to hear what the remaining 80 plus participants could come up with.

PART 3) part 1

PART 3) part 2

PART 3) part 3

PART 3) part 4

PART 3) part 5

PART 3) part 7

PART 3) part 10

PART 3) part 11
