Happy Chinese New Year 2007

18 Feb 2007 End of Chinese New Year Day One Post:

I started the new year talking to Sushi Rabbit on the MSN, who was pretty distressed about her studies because they were mountainous, even during the Chinese New Year holidays. Those professors were so inhumane and not understanding about giving students a break during holidays. I was hoping to cheer her up. Hoped I had managed to do that.

After the MSN-ing, I was typing an email to Teresa, praising her for the good performance given during the Chinese New Year Live Show. I thought the performance was pretty important because it was the major CNY show on television and most of Singapore's CNY-celebrating people would be watching it after the reunion dinners. Thankfully, the girl did not disappoint and managed to leave everyone a very good impression of her.

After a five hour sleep, I woke up at 8.30am to have the first breakfast of the new Chinese Lunar Year and to my family, it was just as important as the reunion dinner and the table was laid out in some of the most delicious cakes, tarts, karopok, grilled meat, beverages and everyone was there to have a nice, leisurely breakfast.

We followed the usual tradition of a family movie together and left for Orchard Cineleisure to watch the locally-made movie "Just Follow Law". The movie was entertaining in its own right, making comical jabs at the inefficiencies of the civil service sector in Singapore but I personally don't think it is a suitable movie for Chinese New Year and the jokes were targeted not really at the general audience but specifically at the civil servants.

After the movie, I gave my parents, aunt and brother a later lunch treat at 2Hot Halal Cafe at The Esplanade. We had some really interesting and delicious courses such as asian salad, grilled lamb and marsala fish & chips. The grilled lamb was pretty skilfully done and I promised myself to go back again for more of it.

The final Chinese New Year family tradition is the visit to the Singapore River Hongbao Festival Fair near the Esplanade and although it was drizzling intermittently, the whole family managed to slowly sift through the stalls and took photographs of the usual God of Fortune statue as well as an interesting golden tree where people kept throwing coins to sound the bell intertwined in the trunk of that tree.

The rain got bigger by the time we finished the tour of the festival fair and we hailed a cab back home to enjoy the rest of the Chinese New Year Day One in the luxury of the living room in front of the television. Am glad that the year started and ended with an eventful yet peaceful day.
